Getting to Know You (Well, Me)

Yesterday, Katie and I attempted to take outfit photos in some, um, particularly low temperatures. We stood out in the freezing cold without coats or gloves, had some memory card issues, and attempted to look cute for the camera. She succeeded, but me? Not so much. Let's put it this way; it wasn't one of my finest photo shoots. My skirt was sticking to me due to wind, and for most of the shots, one of the corners of this crochet crop top was folded up on accident. I still wanted to show it off though, so I decided to show you one (which I kind of like despite my hair flying everywhere and the top issue). I also figured this would be a good opportunity to share some more personal information about me. Some of you expressed interest in more personal posts from me, so let's get to know each other better, shall we? I did something similar to this a while back (I think for a Liebster award?), so a few of these might be repeats, but I figure that most of you never saw it since it was so long ago.

(Cropped top & cardigan: TJ Maxx // Necklace: Francesca's Collections // Skirt: Thrifted)

1. I figured out what I wanted to do when I was 14.
I'm one of those weird people who figured it out, and then never really questioned it. I decided that I wanted to go into fashion at an early age, and soon figured out that I wanted to go into magazines. I declared a journalism minor during my first semester of freshman year and have never looked back since.

2. I cuss a lot.
A lot. I strongly believe in keeping it clean on the Internet (though I may slip up from time to time), but I love curse words in the real world. It's bound to happen when you have a ton of guy friends and you've worked in a newsroom for the past three years. I also have a REALLY dark sense of humor.

3. AP Style is my shit (sorry).
If you've ever wondering why I write certain things certain ways, it's because I use AP Style for everything, which is the style that is used in journalism. I doubt it's that noticeable, but you might notice a few things such as how I put titles of things in quotation marks or how I write dates (Jan. 23).

4. I hate the ends of things.
I'm not a very emotional person, but nothing gets me like the ends of things. I've never been more emotional than the week I said goodbye to everyone before moving away for college, and I'm positive that the week of graduation in May will be even worse. I hate when TV shows (see below) or books end, and I'm even terrible at ending conversations.

5. I've never cried in a movie.
I know, it sounds crazy, but there really isn't a single movie I've cried during. That said, I've cried during multiple TV shows. They are: during the "Six Feet Under" series finale (which I cried harder during than anything else I've ever watched), "The West Wing" (when Leo died since John Spencer died in real life), "The Office" series finale, and "The Friday Night Lights" series finale. Like I said, I hate the ends of things. Strangely enough, I'm not a sports fan at all, but "FNL" has made me tear up more times than any other show. I might have also teared up during the "Smallest Park" episode of "Parks and Rec."

6. I'm a terribly messy eater.
I often get handed stacks of napkins when eating out, it's not uncommon for me to have to change in the middle of the day because I ruined what I was wearing, I have been on my hands and knees in a bar to pick up spilled popcorn, I just spilled an entire thing of grapes at work the other day, and "I'm really bad at eating" is a sentence I've said more than once. Also, let's just lump in "I'm really, really awkward" into this one.

7. I don't affiliate with any religion.
I've gotten some questions about this before on here because my last name is Katz. Yes, I am technically Jewish, but I've never practiced a religion in my life. My family used to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah when I was little, but for most of my life, we've just celebrated Christmas. I completely respect religion for other people, and I'm not quite sure what I believe in (I pray to the god of coffee), but organized religion just isn't for me.

8. I love making lists.
My friends used to make fun of me a lot in high school because of the ridiculous amount of to-do lists I would make. I don't make nearly as many as I used to on a daily basis, but I still do it constantly. I also love writing list articles.

9. There are three albums that got me through high school and changed my life.
They are "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel, "Yankee Foxtrot Hotel" by Wilco, and "The Execution of All Things" by Rilo Kiley.

10. If I'm mean to you, that means we're good friends.
I'm a very sarcastic person, and pretty much all of my close friendships involve insulting each other all of the time. I can't think of very many friendships I have that aren't like this. They're all pretty screwed up relationships, but oh, well. I like it that way.

Well, enough about me. Tell me about yourselves, even if we already know each other. If you want to write a similar post, feel free to send me the link, and I'll be sure to check it out. Also, more personal posts or not? I know a few of you mentioned you'd like to see more this year, but what's the verdict?

  2. I also cuss a lot, which I'm used to about myself, although my mother always said it was very unladylike. Occasionally I catch myself in a situation where I'm like wait, am I cussing too much? Did I just drop the f bomb and everyone's like what is wrong with her now? And then I think of my mother. But that doesn't happen too often. I am also a big list maker, although I'm not great at following them. Typically, I write things down but don't go back and look at them much, but it helps me remember if I wrote it down and it gives me some peace of mind to know it's there. Also, I hesitate to buy investment pieces of clothing because the number one reason I stopped wearing something is because I've stained it irreparably. That's just my life. We sound a lot alike!

  5. I love this! I loved getting to know you a little bit better! I curse A LOT! I don't curse on my blog, but in real life I fucking curse all the fucking time. Excuse my French. ;) I don't cry during movies either, maybe I get a little teary eyed, but never full-blown, tears running down my face crying, like my friends. The only time I really cried was after I saw The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I'm glad you mentioned religion because while I grew up Jewish and I really respect the religion and all it's practices and holidays, I've never really connected with religion either. I like to say that I believe in people! :)

    Great post!

  6. Haha, I love cuss words, too. I throw them around quite freely and don't really give a fuck. ;) It seems so silly to me to be offended by that kind of thing. Like... why? I can give you a list of issues to care more about if you need one.

"The Execution of All Things" by Rilo Kiley changed my life, too! Listening to it always makes me cry.

  8. I swear ALL THE TIME. It's pretty bad...lol. But I like it. haha. I'm also not really into organized religion and I love making lists too. I used to just make lists for fun. Lists of my favorite bands, songs, books, etc. Now I get so busy sometimes that I forget to even make a list of things!

  15. Haha, love that you listed that you like making lists ;)
And I've found myself slipping up while typing up blog posts and start using curse words...aha, college man. It loosened my tongue :P I usually try to avoid them, but when I'm pissed off, excited, or just in a giddy mood (I know, weird), that's when I cuss a lot.
Haha, and I started laughing about your abusive friendships. That's the kind of bond I have with Corina. We're just awful to each other, but it's like a running joke that no one else gets. Just makes us even closer!
I loved this list Elana! It's nice knowing more about the person behind a blog :)

  16. Ha, I'm really picky about grammar, but I was raised on MLA rather than APA! So I would have italicized Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. (By the way, I fucking love that album.)

  17. Loved reading this post, Elana!! I feel like people don't know how much I curse (I swear, I have the mouth of a sailor, but like you, I keep it clean on my blog)! And I'm such an MLA girl and kind of forgot about AP style (shows how long I've been out of college...). So interesting that you've cried at TV shows but not movies -- though I can understand why... I think TV shows allow you to become more invested over a longer period of time. Plus, when you go into a movie, there is definitive finality attached, whereas a TV show is so much more open-ended! I need to do another one of these types of posts one of these days.

  18. I LOOOVED learning more about you before through this post, although you're right, some of it I didn't know before. That's interesting about the movies/TV show crying to me bcuz i've def cried during movies but don't think ever a tv show but also i dont really have shows i follow. we didnt have tv until i was 6 i think and then i was only allowed to watch 30 mins a day so basically all pop culture references are totally lost on me and i mean like all. i just found out like 3 days ago why beyone's tour was called the mrs. carter show. hopefully when we meet you'll still want to be my friend : ). oh and, i love these pics!! i bet you have some other good ones too and are just being self-critical.

  19. I loved reading more about you and would love more posts like this! I'm super jealous of you knowing what you wanted to be and not look back. Damn it sounds like you were super on top of things even in high school! I am SUPER emotional about the ends of things, I'm such a nostalgic person. I cry at the end of shows too- plus I get emotional thinking about what it's like for the actors to be saying goodbye to each other, haha! I've cried at multiple Parks & Recs- shhhh... ;)

  20. You have excellent taste in music! How didn't I know this? I too studied print journalism and find myself slipping into UCLAN's style. Nowadays I use sentences that I teach the kids! Ha! I can't believe you've never cried in a movie! Shocking! Xx

  21. Um. Hell yes to all the albums under #9. I love all of those and listen to them regularly. I saw Neutral Milk Hotel live last year and it was so gloriously awesome I can't even describe it. I love hearing that other people have a dark sense of humor too because I feel like I do and sometimes people don't get it. Also yes to #5, 7, & 8. And the cursing. We need to be real life friends for real.

  26. Oh I loved reading this! I used to NEVER cry in movies, tv shows, or anything. I'd say like, 3 or 4 years ago that changed and now I cry during everything. It's ridiculous. I really do hope you make it to Seattle someday. I think we'd get along swimmingly!

  28. I loved reading this! The verdict is, yes!! It's always nice to get to know the person behind the blog better, that always makes me more interested.

I'm amazed that you have never cried at a movie [NOT EVEN LION KING?!], especially since you hate endings (me too!) and have cried during several tv shows. I guess it's much easier to get emotionallly invested in a tv series than a single movie. I like series of shows/movies/books better for that reason!
