Thigh-high tights and heels

You should know that this is probably the only time you'll see these tights.

Going to school in nowhere-land means a couple of things: no mall, no Chipotle, no Starbucks, and, most importantly, no Target (though let's be honest, Starbucks is actually the most important). The nearest Target is at least half an hour away, which means I do most of my shopping at Wal-Mart. Meaning when I can't wait until I'm in Galesburg, Quincy, or back home, I  have to buy my tights from there. Now, I don't actually have anything against Wal-Mart, it really does satisfy all of my college-student-on-a-budget needs, but it will never compare to Target for me. I also just really love Target tights. So when the weather turned cold and I only had one pair of black tights without holes, I went to Wal-Mart. After picking up an opaque black pair, I was excited to see a polka dot pair on clearance for $3, which I quickly snapped up and bought. Unfortunately, they turned out to be thigh-highs and extremely thin. I have absolutely zero experience with thigh-high tights and in the midst of frustratingly attempting to pull them up on the way to a club meeting, they ripped all the way down the back of one leg. I kept them on for the meeting and these photos, but I think my first experience with thigh-highs shall be my last.

Despite my bad experience with Wal-Mart tights, I actually had a great experience with K-Mart shoes. Because, yes, the town I live in has a Wal-Mart, a K-Mart, and not one, but TWO McDonalds, but no Target or Starbucks. I actually didn't believe my friend Jessica when she told me that K-Mart had cute shoes, but I was proved wrong. I never buy heels because I hardly ever wear them, but when I saw these were only $5 (50% off the clearance price), I had to have them. I really do never have an excuse to wear heels, but I like that I can get away with anything at my VAMO club meetings considering it's a room full of fashion majors. I'm not exactly sure how much use I'll get out of them, but for $5, who cares?

As if the post wasn't long enough already, I also just have to say how glad I am that this dress (that I'm wearing as a skirt) has finally made an appearance. It's one of my favorite items I own, but it's so thin (it's not a slip, I swear) and the cut of it was made for someone with less curves than me. Luckily, layering and sweaters solve any problem.

Make sure to keep checking out the style collective blog I'm apart of, Flock Together, for all of the bloggers' intro posts this week and next week! Also, if you feel so inclined, follow along on Facebook and Twitter!

  1. I know exactly what you mean about going to school in the middle of nowhere. All we have is a Wal*Mart too. Lucky for me, we have a lot of thrift stores, so I can definitely make-do.

I love those shoes! Completely adorable. I like the tights too- glad you got pictures of them at least!

  2. Oh man, I hate thigh highs. I mean, they look awesome, sure, but they're so annoying to have to keep yanking up to keep them in place -_- Too bad these aren't tights! They'd be the perfect polka dot pair.
Don't you just love layers? Haha, they fix everything! That dress as a skirt is so pretty. :D

  4. Lol, I have to laugh a little because the town you are describing (K-mart, Wal-mart, McD...though only one, not two) is the town a half-hour away from me. We don't even have that (though, for the most part this is okay.)

Too bad about the tights because they are adorable! I also find your skirt rather intriguing; it envokes a different age somehow.

  5. such a cute outfit! love those polka dot tights and those shoes! I would definitely agree about thigh highs.. they are always too difficult to keep up. & although I have a love/hate relationship with target (I always spend way more moolah than i plan there.. every time!), I don't think I could live without it lol.

  6. Those tights are fabulous! I totally agree that Target > Walmart. I'm lucky enough to have have a Target nearby to score some things at. I don't think there are any K-marts around, but if I see one I will check out the shoe section. Thanks for the heads up on thigh-highs :)

  8. I'm a snob so I hate Walmart...all the ones here are dirty and gross. Target all the way! Haha (and Kmart is okay :) )
I don't think I would be able to wear thigh highs, ha ha...too bad those ones ripped, they're cute!

  9. What a gorgeous outfit! It's so funny, but I actually posted an outfit with sheer polka-dot tights and a pair of heels very similar to that pair earlier this week. I think the two just go so well together. <3

And thanks so much for the comment on my blog! I really loved that outfit. ;D And I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds getting old so weird. ;D

  10. Love the skirt/ dress, the color and the laciness are amazing together! Too bad about the tights though, because they look really cute! I had a similar experience with your Kmart one in Sears last year! They were having a huge clearance sale and I found so many really cute things! Sears! You would never guess. I started college at Gettysburg College in PA before transfering and they did not have a Starbucks or a Target either- only Walmart! AT least you have Kmart too :)

  11. well I LOVE it as a skirt!! and you could maybe wear a slip under to add an extra layer or actually sweater or long sleeve top under? I have that same prob w/ one of my dresses that is super thin. hope you have some good local coffee shops instead : ) and what a shame about the tights, they're adorable.

  13. I'm with you 100% on this one! For a little over a year I lived in this town that had one traffic light and the closest store was this grocery store that was 20 minutes away. No Target or Starbucks for about 40 miles. Painful...yes.

I'm really very smitten with your outfit here Elana! That dress and those tights are having me in swoon-mode. I can't believe you found those beauties at Walmart. I'm going to have to go on a hunt next time I'm there :)

  16. Elana, hi! Well first off, I'm jealous that you don't have class today and you're baking cookies instead.
Second, I have already visited Flock Together and am planning a mass comment session very soon (great work girls, I love it!). And the fact that your name is pronounced like Alana, (like, Allanahhh like Honey Boo Boo? Right?) blew my mind!
Third, I express my condolences that you have no Target. I don't even know what I would do.
Fourth, this outfit like woah! I feel like it's different that what I have seen you in...(maybe it's because, duh, it's fall now) but I love it! Great great use of layering, and I love the silky dress poking out under the sweater! K-mart heels for the win and Wal-Mart tights for the loooose. Thigh-highs are just weird.

Last, ha I never actually emailed you. I just thought I did. I am crazy. This comment is absurd. But now, I WILL email you!
